Research at least 3 isotopes and discuss their importance and their uses.
Family of people often consists of cognate but not identical individuals. Elements have families as well, called isotopes. Isotopes are members of a family of an element that all have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
Example:
1. Carbon-12 - 6 protons and 6 neutrons - Stable, meaning it never undergoes radioactive decay.
2. Carbon-13 - 6 protons and 7 neutrons - Used as a tracer to follow the history of carbon atoms in their passage through chemical and biochemical reactions.
3. Carbon-14 - 6 protons and 8 neutrons - Serves as a clock, showing the object’s age in a process called “carbon dating.”
