Collect at least 5 pictures showing physical and chemical change and provide caption or explanation for each picture.
Changes can be seen everywhere. If you observe properly your environment, you can list various examples of changes; specifically physical and chemical change. Physical change is a type of change in which a substance change its appearance but the chemical composition itself did not change; this change is reversible. Meanwhile, the chemical change in which the chemical formula may rearrange and form a new compound. This is also be related to chemical reactions wherein a substance may break or make new bonding and transform a substance into another form. You can identify that a certain substance undergo to a chemical change if (1) color changed, (2) if there is a formation of bubble which indicates that a gas was released, (3) if there is a change in temperature, (4) if the odor changed, and etc. Here are some examples of physical and chemical change found in our surroundings:
1. Caption: Crushed coca-cola bottle.
Explanation: This coca-cola bottle shows a physical change because only the shape of the bottle alter or the appearance of the object reshaped. In addition, the chemical substance of this object like polycarbonate plastics did not break nor rearrange.
2. Caption: Sliced apple left on the plate.
Explanation: The picture below shows a chemical change because there is an alteration in the color of the object. The pulp or flesh of the apple turns into color brown after it was sliced and left into the plate. Since the flesh was exposed to the air wherein oxygen is present, the oxidation reaction occurs. In the reaction, it activates the polyphenol oxidase (enzyme) in the fruit that is why it turns into a brown color.
3. Caption: Boiling water.
Explanation: Boiling water is a physical change because the water vapor still contains the same molecular structure as a liquified water. Furthermore, boiling (process) of a substance is classified under the physical change.
4. Caption: Rusting metal knot screw and metal chains.
Explanation: Rusting is a chemical change because as an iron or metals exposed to water and air that contains oxygen, the oxidation reaction will occur in which iron reacts with water and oxygen and later form a rust (hydrated iron (III) oxide).
5. Caption: Pieces of chopped wood.
Explanation: The picture below shows a physical change because even if the whole piece of wood were chopped into pieces, the chemical properties of the substance did not change at all. There is just alteration on the appearance of the wood which is smaller versions of the big piece of wood.
